History

John W. Nordstrom came to the US at the age of 16 from Sweden. The idea was to build a brand that can withstand the test of time. The boy first thought to do a potato farm business in Washington, but no luck. He also gave a shot to the Gold Rush in Canada and did well with it. But he figured shortly that this is not his cup of tea, and he was ready to sell all the gold he found during his efforts in the year 1897. He knew that something big is waiting for him and that this is not his destiny. With the help of his wife, Hilda Carlson, he started a shoe store in Seattle, in 1901. The store was initially called Wallin & Nordstrom. His partner Carl F. Wallin, was already running a shoe repair shop.

John and Wallin thought of retirement and sold their shares in 1928 and 1929, respectively. The new shareholders rebranded the brand as Nordstrom and planned a grand opening of the remodeled Second Avenue store in 1030. We can say that this marks the true birth of this mega-brand.
